Set the name other parents see
Go by "Katie" when the roster says "Kathleen" — a display name you set yourself, what it changes, and the places that still show your name from school records.
The name on your school’s roster is the name the school needs for its records. It isn’t always the name you’d like a class channel to call you. Your display name is yours to set: Kathleen going by Katie, a parent who kept a different last name from their children, anyone whose legal first name nobody actually uses.
Set your display name
- Open Profile › Your account.
- Next to Display name, choose Edit.
- Type the name you want other parents to see, and Save.
To go back to your roster name, clear the field and save — an empty box means “just use what the school has,” so there’s nothing separate to undo.
A few limits worth knowing: it’s up to 60 characters, and it runs through your school’s blocked-terms list, the same screening nametags and titles get. If a name is refused, the dialog says so on the spot and the box stays open so you can adjust it.
Where your display name shows
Everywhere one parent reads another. Once you save it, it’s the name on:
- Your messages, and the quoted replies to them.
- Announcements you post, if you’re a poster.
- Channel member lists, presence, and the @mention list — which means people can also type the name they saw, word by word. “Josie’s mom” is reachable from “mom.”
- People search and direct messages — someone can find you by your display name or by your roster name; both work.
- Committee rosters and sign-up lists, so the fall festival sheet shows the name the room knows.
- Push notifications and your school’s email digest, so the sender line matches the app.
Where your roster name still shows
Your display name never overwrites school records, and it’s deliberately not used on the surfaces that exist to reconcile a person against those records:
- The People and roster pages your school admins work in.
- The service-hours ledger, approvals, and commitment reports.
- The moderation queue, audit trails, and any data your school exports.
Admins see both — your roster name, with your display name beside it — so nobody behind an unfamiliar name is hard to place. The practical version: a display name changes how you’re addressed, never who you are in the school’s files.
Display name, nametag, or title?
Three different labels, and they stack rather than compete:
- Display name — you set it; it applies everywhere, in place of your roster name.
- Nametag — you set it, one channel at a time; it shows beside your name (“Josie’s mom”).
- Title — your school sets it; it shows beside your name in every channel (“PTA President”).
So the 3rd-grade channel can show “Katie Nguyen · Josie’s mom” — display name, then nametag. See Add a nametag so people know who you are.
If you have children at more than one school
Your display name is set per school. Lumicura screens it against that school’s blocked-terms list, and those lists differ, so a name you set at one school doesn’t follow you to another — set it again there if you want it. See Switch between schools.
