Turn announcement texts on or off

Some schools send announcements as text messages too. How SMS delivery works, and how to opt in or out.

For families who don’t live in apps, some schools also send announcements as plain text messages. If your school uses this, here’s how it behaves and how to control it.

How announcement texts work

  • Urgent announcements only. Texts are never used for chat messages, and not even for routine announcements — only ones your school marks urgent go out by text. Your phone won’t buzz because a channel got chatty, and texts should be rare.
  • One-way. The text carries the headline and a link into the app for the full story. Replying to the text doesn’t post anything anywhere.
  • Same news, different door. A text is just another delivery of the announcement that’s already in your feed — skip the text and you’ve still got it in the app.

Turn texts on or off

  1. Open your notification settings from your profile.
  2. Find the text message / SMS option for announcements.
  3. Pick your setting: on, off, or use your school’s default (schools choose whether families start opted in or out). If it’s on, make sure the mobile number next to the setting is correct — that’s where texts go.

Standard carrier text rates apply, as with any SMS.

If texts aren’t arriving

  • Check your mobile number in your profile — see Update your profile and family info.
  • Check the SMS toggle is on.
  • If you ever replied STOP to a school text, your carrier blocks further texts from that number until you reply START.
